Getting To Shetland By Air

Loganair operate daily scheduled flights to Sumburgh. www.loganair.co.uk

If you fly you may want to consider hiring a car from Sumburgh Airport although it is possible to get a bus from Sumburgh to Lerwick and then Lerwick to Shoreside cottage (the main bus route from Lerwick to walls village passes approx 100 yards / 2 minutes walk from the cottage.

Getting To Shetland By Sea

Northlink Ferries operate a daily (overnight) vehicle and passenger service between Aberdeen and Lerwick in Shetland. www.northlinkferries.co.uk The journey is a lovely way to start and end your holiday. On-board there are two bars, two restaurants, a cinema, a shop, kids play area and more. It is advisable to book a berth in a cabin so you get a good nights sleep.

Driving To Shoreside Holiday Cottage

For satnav's use Postcode ZE2 9NP - NOTE this will actually direct you to the house immediately up the hill (approx 1/4 mile) from Shoreside Cottage - so at the end of your journey turn left instead of right to go down to the cottage - by this time you will see it on the seashore to your left.

From Sumburgh Airport

Distance approx 44miles - journey time approx 1hr 15 minutes.

Start out at Sumburgh Airport, drive approximately half a mile till you come to a T junction.
At the T junction (runway is on your right), turn right onto the A970 (signposted Lerwick).
Continue on the A970 past Sandwick, through Cunningsburgh and Quarff.
3 miles north of Quarff, at the junction, turn left onto the B9073 (signposted north, A970).
One mile later, at the T junction, turn right (signposted Lerwick and the North).
Continue along this road for about a mile (you will see windmills to your left on the hill). At the T junction, turn left (signposted A970).
Continue on the A970 for approx 3 miles into Tingwall valley.
Turn left A971 and drive for approx 22 miles. You will pass through Weisdale and Bixter.
After Bixter you have approx 4 miles to go.
About 2 miles past Bixter you will pass a sign to Gruting on your left, some lochs on the right, then a sign to West Burrafirth on your right; around 1.5 miles after this last sign you will pass another sign to Gruting on your left. You are nearly there. Keep going around the long right bend in the road, Shoreside is the cottage on the seashore down to your left (theres a small boat jetty moored in the sea in front of it).

From Lerwick Ferry Terminal

Distance approx 23 miles - journey time approx 25 minutes.

After you disembark, exit the terminal. In around 50 yards at the T junction with the main road turn right (30mph Speed limit).
Continue ahead for approx 1/2 mile, at the mini roundabout turn right - watch for the speed limit change to 40mph.
Continue past the Petrol station on your left and up the hill past the garage on the left. Near the top of the hill anticipate a speed limit to change to national speed limit.
In around 2 miles you will see windmills on the hill before you.
Continue forward down the hill - you will see a golf course on your right, at the bottom of the valley the road will bend sharply to the right (signpost to Scalloway and airport on your left) and double back up the other side of the valley. Continue up the other side of the valley with the windmills now on your left and the golf course on your right. You are on the A970.
Continue on the A970 for approx 3 miles into Tingwall valley.
Turn left A971 and drive for approx 22 miles. You will pass through Weisdale and Bixter.
